Cyclocross racing has seen big growth in recent years. But cyclocross bikes have grown in popularity even faster, and the explanation is pretty simple: cyclocross bikes are very versatile. Compared to typical road bikes, `cross-bike wheels are stronger and handle a bigger range of tire sizes and types. The gearing is often a little wider range for easier uphill pedaling. The brakes are stronger, for better control going down the other side. All this means that cyclocross bikes make great fast-commuting bikes, and even decent touring bikes when the loads are light and the hills aren’t too steep. Even if you just want a nice day riding road bike and prefer comfort and stability over fast-twitch handling, a cyclocross bike can be a great choice.

The Fuji Cross Comp is an excellent example of the cyclocross breed. It is reasonably light (under 23 lbs.), has crisp handling without being a handful on the descents, a nice component mix with Shimano 105 and Ultegra derailleurs, and stout 32 spoke wheels with Alex DC-19 rims.
