The Arkel MapCase attaches to your bike’s handlebar and gives you easy access to your trip maps. It is a great solution when you don’t want or can’t use a handlebar bag with a built-in map pocket. It connects to the handlebar with two reinforced velcro straps—the straps are long enough to work around computers and lights and other accessories mounted on the handlebar. In its closed position the case rests on top of the stem.

When folded, one side of the map case has two flat pockets. One pocket is 8-1/2” by 3”, is see-through and closes with a velcro tab. The second pocket is 8-1/2” by 5”, closes with a zipper, and is a handy place to stash a wallet, credit cards, money and keys. Flip the folded case over and you’ll see the back side of the main see-through compartment. If you mount the map case on your bike with this side up, you’ll be able to see a map up to 8-1/2” by 5” without unfolding the case.

The map case is held closed/folded by a velcro tab. Unfold the case and you’ll see a window into the full 8-1/2” by 11” map compartment. That is one of the biggest advantages of this case over the map pockets on handlebar bags, which are usually smaller and can’t display as much map area at one time.

The Arkel MapCase removes quickly from the bike, and is a decent size to carry around as a satchel or wallet (but is too large to fit in most clothing pockets). The velcro straps can wrap around your belt to turn the map case into a poor-man’s fanny pack.

Note: this map case is not waterproof. If your are concerned about rain, either put waterproofing on your maps or enclose them in self-sealing plastic bags. If you want a waterproof map holder, look at the Ortlieb map case (which works best when attached to Ortlieb handlebar bags).
