The Back-Roller Classic is Ortlieb’s most popular pannier set. It is the purest expression of Ortlieb’s guiding philosophy, which is to strive for simple, rugged designs that are waterproof. The Back-Roller Classic achieves this ideal by having just a single compartment that uses a roll closure at the top (similar to that used on dry bags for canoeing and kayaking), making panniers that are light and easy to use, but very durable, waterproof and dust resistant. When properly closed, the roll closure on these panniers is so effective that the contents will stay dry even if the panniers are completely submerged in water.

The main (and only) compartments measure 16.5” x 6.7” x 12.6”/9” (tapered top to bottom) each, for a total volume for the pair of 2441 cubic inches. The roll-top closure is held shut by a strap that doubles as a shoulder strap for carrying the pannier off the bike.

The Back-Roller Classic panniers fit most comfortably on the rear. The matching front pannier set is the Front-Roller Classic, which uses the same materials, design and attachment system.

The “QL1” mounting system used on the Back-Roller Classic is Ortlieb’s original design, and is very versatile, durable and easy to use. The system requires just a single 3 mm hex wrench to adjust (not included), and will work with narrow diameter rod racks such as Blackburn as well as large diameter hollow tube racks such as Tubus and Old Man Mountain. The QL1 system allows the panniers to come off the rack very quickly by just lifting up on the carrying strap, but is very secure so the bags won’t pop off accidentally while riding.

The Back-Roller Classic pannier uses Ortlieb’s normal bag construction. The main body fabric is double coated polyester, which is very rugged, puncture and abrasion resistant, and highly waterproof. All the main seams in the bag are welded, not sewn. Welded seams are expensive to construct, but they are stronger than sewn seams, and no needle holes means no need for extra waterproofing and no leaks. The result is a durable, waterproof bag, backed by a 5 year warranty against defects.
