Old Man Mountain Cold Springs rear rack

The Old Man Mountain Cold Springs rear rack comes in versions to fit almost any bike with 26” or 700c wheels, but is best for situations where other racks don’t fit—mountain bikes with rear suspension (non-rigid rear triangles). This was Old Man Mountain’s first rack, introduced in 1996. At the time there were no other racks made for attaching heavy loads to full suspension bikes, and in our opinion this is still the best solution for full suspension rigs.

The Cold Springs is Old Man Mountain’s second most rugged rear rack, surpassed only by the Red Rock (a rear rack for rigid rear triangle bikes). The Cold Springs has a weight capacity of 50 pounds. It comes in 700c and 26” versions, and works on rigid and suspension forks, with cantilever or v-brakes and with disc brakes. It attaches at the bottom via an extra-long QR skewer through the rear axle (skewer included) and at the top with two aluminum extender bars that bolt to the fork brake bosses and to the rack. The mounting system is adjustable to make the top platform level and durable enough to handle rough off-road use with a full load.

The Cold Springs rack measures 11.75” long by 6.25” wide and is 14.25” tall. It weighs 610 grams. It is constructed of hollow aluminum tubing for the struts, plate aluminum for the top deck and side attachment points, and machined and welded aluminum for the axle fittings. The aluminum is 6061-T6 alloy for strength, anodized black for looks. It is made in the USA, and has a lifetime guarantee.

Note: Old Man Mountain racks, and any other racks constructed of steel or aluminum tube stock, are not compatible with child seats, Wald baskets, or any other accessories that use clamps fastened by nuts and bolts to attach to the rack. The clamps will crush the tube stock. For this type of accessory, use racks made with solid aluminum rod such as Blackburn racks.
